asylum

31 Jul 2011

Asylum is an area of immigration law that refers to protection for individuals who seek refugee in a signatory country because of fear of persecution in their county of origin because of their race, religion, political affiliation, social group or their nationality. The United Kingdom is one of the signatory countries to the Treaty of Rome 1957 which is the international agreement that started recognition of refugees. An asylum seeker in the United Kingdom must apply in person to the immigration authorities as soon or as they arrive or as soon as possible after they have arrived in the United Kingdom and state the reasons why they are applying for asylum and need the protection of the Treaty.
